Over 200 guests joined MC/Host, Designer Jamie Drake, and Karl Green, auctioneer and director of Furniture & Decorative Arts, Bonhams NY, as they auctioned off one-of-a-kind up-cycled chairs created by local designers and artisans. Additionally, entries from IFDA Japan and California chapters were viewed on-screen. Attendees enjoyed great music, hors d’oeuvres and drinks.
Besides local IFDA chapter professional development, proceeds will benefit relief efforts for Japan Tsunami and Hurricane Sandy victims as follows:
Tsunami Relief Restoration Support Association Fukushima Forum, Osaka Japan fukushima-f.com This General Incorporated Organization in Kansai was set up by a refuge from Fukushima, an area severely hit by the Tsunami. There are many refugees living in Kansai area who needs support both financially and mentally. This organization, recommended by IFDA Japan, supports these people by offering many opportunities to connect refugees with each other and to encourage them in many ways.
Hometown Heroes njhometownheroes.org. is a 501(c)3 organization founded in 2008, to provide assistance to the community at large and help any individual or family regardless of ethnicity, gender and age that suddenly finds themselves in a crisis. Hometown Heroes created a Restore the Shore campaign in an ongoing effort to immediately assist local residents as they recover from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy. Hometown Heroes will use the monies raised by all three IFDA chapters for New Jersey clean-up efforts and also allocate a portion towards their new New York efforts.

EVENT INFORMATION: NEW YORK • CALIFORNIA • JAPAN
IFDA chapters in San Diego, New York, and Osaka, Japan are pleased to announce the first international, simultaneous design exhibition. This exhibit, called Take a Seat, will feature up-cycled chairs creatively redesigned by area members of the furnishings and design industry. Proceeds will benefit Japan Tsunami Relief, Hurricane Sandy Relief and chapter professional development.
The exhibition will be open to the public and will commence on the same day in all locations, will run simultaneously for 10 or more days, and will conclude with a gala event where all the chairs will be sold to raise funds for these projects. Current time frame is May 7-16, 2013. A kick-off party via Skype between all the participating chapters will be the opening event.
In New York, the opening party will take place late Tuesday evening, May 7th at the TOTO showroom in SoHo. This opening event will be open to IFDA members only, chair designers or teams, event and chapter sponsors and the press. Since we will be meeting and partying with the designers and special guests in Japan and California via live skype, we will be having our "nightcap" while Japan is having their morning coffee!
The New York chairs will be on exhibit from Tuesday May 7th through Tuesday, May 21st so that visitors to NYCxDesign and ICFF can stop by to see the display in the store windows and floor of the block-wide Lillian August, store. The gala party and auction will take place on Thursday evening May 16th at Lillian August, 12 W. 20th St. Tickets for this event, open to all, are available for purchase on-line ($20) through the IFDA•NY Chapter on this page. The Take a Seat show will be a forum to display both the multiple talents of IFDA members and other top industry professionals and the sponsor products sold in the exhibition locations.
The viewers will be asked to cast a vote for their favorite, and one chair at each location will be selected as “People’s Choice” and the designers will receive an award at the gala. The gala will be open to the public and the chairs will be auctioned off to the highest bidder.
International vendors are invited to join as sponsors at varying levels to enhance and promote international trade with the furnishings and design industry members. The international sponsors will be featured in all media in all locations. Local vendors will also have an opportunity to participate as sponsors and will be featured in local media.
IFDA has initiated a foreign exchange program for members to promote business and travel between the U.S. and Japan to participate in professional symposiums, market events, show houses, etc.

Making Room: New Models for Housing New Yorkers
showcases innovative design solutions to better accommodate New York City's changing, and sometimes surprising, demographics, including a rising number of single people, and will feature a full-sized, flexibly furnished micro-studio apartment of just 325 square feet - a size prohibited in most areas of the city. Visitors to the exhibition will see models and drawings of housing designs by architectural teams commissioned in 2011 by Citizens Housing & Planning Council, in partnership with the Architectural League of New York. The exhibition also presents winning designs from the Bloomberg administration's recently launched pilot competition to test new housing models, as well as examples set by other cities in the United States and around the world, including Seattle, Providence, Montreal, San Diego, and Tokyo.
